Oracle has unveiled two new models of its Oracle Database Appliance, addressing the needs of small and mid-sized businesses. "Many organizations do not have the time, resources or expertise to build their own system and often struggle managing different platforms and systems. By offering a pre-integrated solution that is optimized for the database and the cloud, Oracle allows organizations of all sizes to free up their IT staff from maintenance and other routine tasks to focus on innovation and core business processes." said Karen Sigman, VP, Converged Infrastructure, Oracle.

IMS Health, a provider of healthcare information and technology solutions, and Reltio, a data-driven applications and modern data management company, have announced that IMS Health is offering Reltio Cloud with its Nexxus Commercial Application Suite and IMS One platform. Talend is "going all-in" with Amazon Web Services (AWS), now providing its entire product line on AWS cloud. Splice Machine has announced that it is releasing its database management system, a dual-engine RDBMS powered by Hadoop and Spark, as an open source platform. The community edition will be free for members of the open source community, allowing them to use as well as modify source code, whereas the enterprise edition will include a set of proprietary tools focused on operational features that enable DBAs and DevOps teams to maintain, tune, and keep the platform secure while it's live.

Cloudera is collaborating with Microsoft to build a new open source platform that will reduce the burden on application developers leveraging Spark. For those who haven't encountered the term, the "trough of disillusionment" is a standard phase within the Gartner hype cycle. New technologies are expected to pass from a "peak of inflated expectations" through the trough of disillusionment before eventually reaching the "plateau of productivity." Most new technologies are expected to go through this trough, so it's hardly surprising to find big data entering this phase.

Today at Spark Summit, MapR Technologies is announcing a new enterprise-grade Apache Spark Distribution. "This is a Spark-focused distribution that combines Apache Spark with the real time, persistent, web-scale data layer of MapR," said Jack Norris, SVP, Data and Applications, MapR. Open Text Corporation, a provider of Enterprise Information Management solutions, is entering into a definitive agreement to acquire Recommind, Inc., a leading provider of eDiscovery, and information analytics. The transaction purchase price is approximately $163 million and with this acquisition, Recommind's eDiscovery platform will complement OpenText's own enterprise information management (EIM) solutions.

Oracle is introducing version 4.0 of its NoSQL database. First introduced in 2011, the Oracle NoSQL Database is a key-value database that evolved from the company's acquisition of BerkeleyDB Java Edition, a mature, high-performance embeddable database. Ashok Joshi, senior director of NoSQL, Berkeley Database, and Database Mobile Server at Oracle, outlined the key enhancements in the new release.

IBM intends to acquire EZ Legacy Ltd., an Israel-based application discovery company. The company's technology helps developers to understand and change mainframe code based on data displayed on a dashboard and other visualizations in order to ease the process of modernizing applications, exposing APIs and more efficiently leveraging development resources. Terms of the deal, which is expected to close in the second quarter of 2016, were not released.

EMC has introduced UniK, an open source contribution that enables developers to deploy applications to the cloud and IoT devices by compiling application sources into unikernels. UniK as an open source project is recognized under the DevHigh5 program through EMC {code}, a program that supports and provides recognition to developers and partners for their open source contributions. By releasing UniK as a collaborative open source project, EMC expects the tool to help bring customers closer to cloud native application platforms through the choice of running applications with containers or unikernels.

Thanks to the cloud and other empowering technologies such as Hadoop and Apache Spark, we're at the tipping point for big data. These technologies now provide a path to big data success for companies who otherwise lack the specialized big data skills or heretofore proprietary (and expensive) infrastructure to do it themselves. As 2016 progresses, we'll see the broader market put big data capabilities to work and the benefits of big data will, in turn, spread beyond the privileged few companies that were early big data adopters.

The OpenStack Trove database as a service (DBaaS) project has come a long way since incubation in Grizzly and Havana, and integration in the Icehouse release in April 2014. At that time, it supported single instances of MongoDB, MySQL and a few other databases. Today, Trove supports Cassandra, Couchbase, CouchDB, DataStax Enterprise, DB2 Express, MariaDB, MongoDB, MySQL Percona, Percona XtraDB Cluster, Redis, and Vertica.
