Sentrigo, Inc., a provider of database security software, has announced that it has become the sole distributor of Repscan by Red-Database-Security, a 360-degree database vulnerability assessment and security scanning software available for Oracle databases. The product complements and integrates with Sentrigo's Hedgehog family of database activity monitoring software for protecting corporate databases from privileged insiders as well as malicious hackers. Repscan and Hedgehog products are available for download and free evaluation from the Sentrigo website. Repscan scans and reports on Oracle database weaknesses and vulnerabilities.

Sybase last week reported financial results for the first quarter ended March 31, 2009. Total revenue for the first quarter of 2009 increased to $267.5 million from $260.1 million in the first quarter of 2008. License revenue grew to $89.3 million compared to $78.1 million in the first quarter of 2008. Services revenue was $135.0 million, and messaging revenue was $43.3 million in the 2009 first quarter.

EnterpriseDB, an open source database vendor, announced that IBM has licensed its technology to make it easier to deploy applications on DB2 9.7, the upcoming release of IBM's enterprise relational database. The Independent Oracle Users Group (IOUG) will hold two networking and education events for women in technology at the upcoming annual Oracle users group conference COLLABORATE 09. Infobright, an open source data warehousing company, has released Infobright 3.1, the latest version of its data warehouse product that offers simplicity, ease of use and low total cost of ownership. According to the vendor, the columnar database is ideal for analytics, and is available in two editions: a free, open source version named Infobright Community Edition (ICE) and a licensable version named Infobright Enterprise Edition (IEE). The version 3.1 product release contains two primary new features, one of which is available with both the ICE and IEE, and the other only with the IEE.

Oracle announced yesterday morning that it has entered into an agreement to acquire Sun Microsystems, on the heels of a breakdown of a proposed acquisition by IBM. The transaction is valued at approximately $7.4 billion, or $5.6 billion net of Sun's cash and debt.

Sybase, Inc., announced that Sybase IQ 15, combined with Sun Microsystems' Sun Fire X4540 storage server and running the Solaris 10 Operating System (OS), recorded the best price/performance result in the TPC-H benchmark at 3000 GB scale factor for all non-clustered systems. The benchmark simulates decision support systems that analyze large volumes of data, executes queries with a high degree of complexity, and gives answers to critical business questions. Sybase says that the achievement illustrates the effectiveness of Sybase IQ 15 in helping to optimize IT asset utilization and significantly reduce ownership costs.

Microsoft has announced that SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1 is now available via free download to current SQL Server 2008 customers. According to the company, SP1 for SQL Server 2008 is primarily a roll-up of previous cumulative updates and offers increased supportability and stability. Microsoft is encouraging enterprise customers who are currently running SQL Server 2008 to download SP1 via the SQL Server 2008 Web site to take advantage of these improvements.

Oracle is offering a new, smaller version of the HP Oracle Database Machine, according to a post last week on the company's Data Warehouse Insider blog. This follows the initial introduction of the HP Oracle Database Machine, which was unveiled by CEO Larry Ellison at Oracle OpenWorld in September 2008. More than three years in development, Ellison called the offering "the world's fastest database machine."

Greenplum, a leading provider of database software for the next generation of data warehousing and analytics, has announced new technology designed to accelerate data loading for companies dealing with exponential data growth. Greenplum's new "MPP Scatter/Gather Streaming" (SG Streaming) technology eliminates the bottlenecks associated with other approaches to data loading, enabling high-speed flows of data into the Greenplum Database for large-scale analytics and data warehousing. According to Greenplum, some of its customers are achieving production loading speeds of over four terabytes per hour with negligible impact on concurrent database operations. The SG Streaming technology is available immediately and is a standard feature of the Greenplum Database.
