In dimensional modeling, business events are typically designated as facts while descriptive information elements are dimensions. However, events (or information about them) occasionally serve as dimensions as well as facts. A good data architect must watch their p's and q's and be certain when it is appropriate for a fact to also serve as a dimension—or when the dual function is not appropriate.

MongoDB recently released the beta offering of its native data visualization tool, MongoDB Charts, on its cloud database-as-a-service, MongoDB Atlas, which runs on runs on Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Platform. According to the vendor, the new feature allows users to quickly create data visualizations and share them with their teams with no code to write, no tools to configure and no data movement or duplication.

GraphQL has emerged as the favorite alternative to REST for modern web API design. GraphQL was first used internally at Facebook before being open sourced in 2015. GraphQL is described as a data query and manipulation language which at first glance might suggest more in common with SQL than with REST.
