Database Management

Relational Database Management Systems (RDBMSs) continue to do the heavy lifting in data management, while newer database management systems are taking on prominent roles as well. NoSQL database systems such as Key-Value, Column Family, Graph, and Document databases, are gaining acceptance due to their ability to handle unstructured and semi-structured data. MultiValue, sometimes called the fifth NoSQL database, is also a well-established database management technology which continues to evolve to address new enterprise requirements.

One of the most common challenges organizations face when developing an enterprise data governance program is the presence of data silos or pockets of data initiatives scattered throughout the company with little to no association or collaboration of efforts. While many describe their data systems as "siloed," the disjunction is less about the underlying technology and far more about the division created between lines of business.

The emerging Internet of Things (IoT) represents a huge opportunity for today's enterprises but also poses risks. Many organizations are challenged to open up their systems to ever-growing networks of devices, sensors, and systems that are relentlessly spewing data that may or may not be of value. Few of us working in the software industry would dispute that agile methodologies represent a superior approach to older waterfall-style development methods. However, many software developers would agree that older enterprise-level processes often interact poorly with the agile methodology, and long for agility at the enterprise level.
