Database Management

Relational Database Management Systems (RDBMSs) continue to do the heavy lifting in data management, while newer database management systems are taking on prominent roles as well. NoSQL database systems such as Key-Value, Column Family, Graph, and Document databases, are gaining acceptance due to their ability to handle unstructured and semi-structured data. MultiValue, sometimes called the fifth NoSQL database, is also a well-established database management technology which continues to evolve to address new enterprise requirements.

If you've been managing databases for any length of time, you've probably had to contend with the "noisy neighbors" scenario. In this scenario, you have several applications, each with their own database residing on a single instance of SQL Server, which don't share the resources of the server nicely. To deal with this issue, you might want to investigate Resource Governor as an alternative.

There's no doubt that the new wave of nonrelational systems represents an important and necessary revolution in database technology. But while we need to avoid being wedded to the technologies of the past and continuously innovate, ignoring the lessons of history is never a good idea.

The landscape for database management systems is changing more rapidly these days than it has since the earliest days of the relational DBMS. Not only do we have an onslaught of NoSQL database systems of various different forms (column, document, key/value, and graph databases), but we also see a burgeoning market for in-memory database management, where the DBMS relies on main memory instead of disk for data storage, management, and manipulation. But there is another "category" of DBMS evolving that is known as "NewSQL."

The concept of shadow or stealth IT in organizations is not new, but it is a topic that is becoming more relevant. According to Gartner's IT Glossary, shadow IT "refers to IT devices, software and services outside the ownership or control of IT organizations." As IT professionals, what is our role in shadow IT? Is shadow IT good or bad for an organization?

By and large, it seems like today's IT professionals belong to one of two camps: either traditional on-premises IT or the cool, new age cloud. Sometimes, it can even seem like we are talking about two different species. After all, for many of us who come from the client-server era, cloud can be intimidating. Even worse, it can be a source of real anxiety; becoming obsolete is a constant risk in an industry that evolves as fast as ours.

Data integration requirements are growing more demanding. In today's computing environments, data must often be moved between on-premises systems and public clouds, between private and public clouds, between different hybrid clouds, or between different public clouds. A new report based on a survey conducted by Unisphere Research among 342 IOUG members looks at the current state of data integration in the cloud era, including the key issues, priorities and solutions being adopted by organizations. The "2015 IOUG Data Integration for Cloud Survey" was sponsored by Oracle.

Just when you thought NoSQL meant the end of SQL, think again, and realize why you need to hold on to your relational database administrator like it was 1999. NoSQL has proven to be a resilient next-generation database technology for increasingly common internet-era specialized workloads. Now approaching a decade after its arrival on the scene, NoSQL is moving beyond architectural marvels to practical tools in the software development toolkit and, in that process, unveiling tried-and-true capabilities formerly known to be the scalpels of the enterprise relational database. Let's go back to the future and take a look at how the DBA is becoming as relevant as ever while NoSQL evolves for the enterprise.

The objects and relationships identified within any database design need to match with the very subjective realities considered true within a given organization. An optimal data model must incorporate the semantics of the business and provide for a structural arrangement supporting the necessary corporate instrumentality. And that model should do so, even if in the details things within the model are contrary to what other organizations may consider to be the nature of their reality.

Every now and then, somebody will raise the age-old question "How can I measure the effectiveness and quality of my DBA staff?" This can be a difficult question to answer. And it almost always hides the actual question that is begging to be asked, which is "How many DBAs do we need?"

With all the cheerleading and the steady drumbeat of new features being released to Azure, it's easy to lose track of the many cool and valuable new features released in the on-premises version of SQL Server. One of the crown jewels of SQL Server, the cardinality estimator (CE), underwent a large redesign for SQL Server 2014 to improve performance. Cardinality estimates are an extremely important part of query processing. In a nutshell, cardinality estimates are what the relation engine predicts for the number of rows affected by a given operation, including intermediate row sets like those created by filters, aggregations, joins and spool.
