Database Management

Relational Database Management Systems (RDBMSs) continue to do the heavy lifting in data management, while newer database management systems are taking on prominent roles as well. NoSQL database systems such as Key-Value, Column Family, Graph, and Document databases, are gaining acceptance due to their ability to handle unstructured and semi-structured data. MultiValue, sometimes called the fifth NoSQL database, is also a well-established database management technology which continues to evolve to address new enterprise requirements.

Real-time data delivery represents the next frontier of intelligent enterprises, and there is great potential value in the ability to immediately sense and respond to opportunities and threats. At the same time, enterprises are encumbered by existing or legacy technologies and methodologies that may add latency to their data-delivery efforts. What will a real-time enterprise look like?

The staid relational database has been under attack from all quarters—it's too inflexible, it's too siloed, it's too slow for today's real-time requirements. However, relational databases still power many of the most critical data environments across enterprises—both core legacy systems as well as new-age systems of engagement. In today's enterprises, then, the question becomes: How are new technologies—especially the cloud and NoSQL databases—affecting relational database adoption?

Marketers, IT professionals, cloud experts, and regulatory teams all rely heavily on the availability of data on a near-daily basis. And while some of that data is within the walls of the organization, much of it is compiled from outside sources—which is often taken and used without permission. Enter GDPR.

After years of ambiguous expectations about data governance, organizations now have a better handle on how these programs can help them manage the exponential growth of the data they generate. With all of the hype around data being "the oil of the 21st century" and the rise of "the algorithm economy," it seems reasonable to make it a priority to learn more about how laws affect our lives as DBAs. The first law that I have targeted is probably the best-known data law in the U.S.—HIPAA, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996.

In today's data-driven world, it's hard to find a company that doesn't take its data management and protection seriously. Google CEO Eric Schmidt has been quoted as saying that every 2 days, we create as much information as we did from the dawn of civilization up until 2003. This statistic alone highlights the importance and need for top notch database administrators (DBAs) to manage the fast-growing data landscape among today's modern heterogeneous database environment.

If I were to ask if your database load profile is good, bad, or ugly, how would you reply? If you are unsure about how to answer that, you are not alone. There are a lot of factors that come into play—one of the biggest being, "Compared to what?" Most people would agree that having a historic baseline or profile of database activity is important. So, let's move beyond that and get into why it's important and what we can do with those historic datapoints.
