Database Management

Relational Database Management Systems (RDBMSs) continue to do the heavy lifting in data management, while newer database management systems are taking on prominent roles as well. NoSQL database systems such as Key-Value, Column Family, Graph, and Document databases, are gaining acceptance due to their ability to handle unstructured and semi-structured data. MultiValue, sometimes called the fifth NoSQL database, is also a well-established database management technology which continues to evolve to address new enterprise requirements.

Organizations worldwide are grappling with the requirements of the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and it's no secret that finding ways to remain compliant has become one of the most visible challenges, and one that has dominated the conversation. What's more pertinent; however, is the root of the problem: outdated systems which organizations use to track and understand where their data lives. This has grown more difficult day-by-day, as the amount of data collected by organizations grows exponentially. GDPR is a good forcing function to spur them to dig into this problem before it gets worse.

The relational optimizer is a very complex component of the RDBMS that we too often take for granted. The optimization techniques of the major RDBMS products continue to be improved with every new release, too. Relational optimization has saved countless hours of work and, as long as we use it properly and code our applications with knowledge of what optimization can do, the RDBMS can be used for a wide variety of requirements and use cases. Don't lose sight of that as you wend your way through the hype out there regarding new types of database systems.

We're all familiar with the IT "war room" scenario. When there's an issue, members of the IT team come together to troubleshoot and find a solution. For organizations with important applications, such as SQL Server running in virtual infrastructures, these IT teams are no strangers to the IT war room environment. In this case, input from the SQL Server system administrators and DBAs isn't considered (or even requested) when the infrastructure team implements it virtualization plan.

DBAs can recover a database, tune SQL, and may even know how to write some PL/SQL when push comes to shove. And, yes, those are all great skills to have. But in 2018, DBAs need more, writes Matt Malcheski in a new IOUG SELECT article. Malcheski goes over the "hot topics," including blockchain, AI, and Internet of Things, and notes that DBAs of the future will need to understand not only the technical aspects of these and the other technologies but also must be able understand and add value to the functional data requirements necessary for all-encompassing solutions. "This is characterized in a data point from Gartner: By 2021, 40% of IT staff will be 'versatilists' holding multiple roles, most of which will be business rather than technology related."

Data lake is a newer IT term created for a new category of data store. But just what is a data lake? According to IBM, "a data lake is a storage repository that holds an enormous amount of raw or refined data in native format until it is accessed." That makes sense. I think the most important aspect of this definition is that data is stored in its "native format." The data is not manipulated or transformed in any meaningful way; it is simply stored and cataloged for future use.
