Oracle today announced the general availability of MySQL 5.7, the latest version of the open source database. MapR Technologies has added native JSON support to the MapR-DB NoSQL database. The in-Hadoop document database will allow developers to quickly deliver scalable applications that also leverage continuous analytics on real-time data. A developer preview of MapR-DB with sample code is available for download and general availability of these new capabilities in MapR-DB will be available in Q4 2015.

The availability of NoSQL open source software has enabled enterprises to collect large volumes of data from different sources, and software companies have implemented "call back home" features that allow their software to send information to data collection centers within various parameters, creating additional run time configurations and data traffic. Objectivity, which recently introduced ThingSpan, a purpose-built information fusion platform intended to simplify and accelerate companies' ability to deploy and derive value from industrial Internet of Things (IoT) applications, has announced plans to support Intel's TAP (Trusted Analytics Platform) at Strata + Hadoop World, in NYC. Shortly after the explosion of non-relational databases, around 2009, it became apparent that rather than being part of the problem, SQL would instead continue to be part of the solution. If the new wave of database systems excluded the vast population of SQL-literate professionals, then their uptake in the business world would be impeded. Furthermore, a whole generation of business intelligence tools use SQL as the common way of translating user information requests into database queries. Nowhere was the drive toward SQL adoption more clear than in the case of Hadoop.

IBM is acquiring StrongLoop, Inc., a software provider, to help developers connect enterprise applications to mobile, Internet of Things (IoT) and web applications in the cloud. StrongLoop is a provider of application development software - known as enterprise Node.js - that enables software developers to build applications using APIs (application programming interfaces). Financial terms and conditions were not released.

Hortonworks, a provider of enterprise Hadoop, has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Onyara, Inc., the creator of and key contributor to Apache NiFi, an open source project. The acquisition will make it easy for customers to automate and secure data flows fueling the fueling the "Internet of Anything (IoAT)" and to collect, conduct and curate real-time business insights and actions derived from data in motion. As a result of the acquisition, Hortonworks is introducing Hortonworks DataFlow powered by Apache NiFi, which was made available through the NSA Technology Transfer Program in the fall of 2014. The Hortonworks acquisition of Onyara is expected to close in the third quarter of 2015.

Google, whose name became synonymous with internet search, is reorganizing to maintain its innovation and competitiveness. The company is creating a new public holding company called Alphabet, with Google as well as other companies, housed within the new structure. According to Larry Page, CEO of Google, the reorganization is part of an effort to avoid getting "too comfortable," observing in a blog post that in the tech industry, "where revolutionary ideas drive the next big growth areas, you need to be a bit uncomfortable to stay relevant.

SAP has announced an update to SAP SQL Anywhere. Version 17 of the embeddable database technology enables Internet of Things (IoT) systems and data-intensive mobile apps to leverage new remote data synchronization capabilities of SAP SQL Anywhere with the SAP HANA platform to help securely move data between the enterprise and remote locations at the edge of the network.
